Real Diaper Association 2010 Calendar

It was my pleasure to be a sponsor for the Real Diaper Association 2010 Calendar. I just purchased mine! I need a new calendar at work and I think it will be a great way to help inform others about cloth diapers. One of my main goals is to get people thinking about what they put on their children.

There are many reasons that parents cloth diaper their children. There are many reasons that we chose cloth. I had some online friends that were talking about cloth diapers. So I wanted to know what it was all about. I was one of those people that thought that the options were disposables or flats, pins and plastic pants. I think we all started there at one point! This is why it is all about education.

I looked around to see what I could find out about disposables. It disgusted me to find out what materials were in them and how many fill our landfills. It is so much waste! Plus, have you ever smelled a disposable diaper? A “CLEAN” one that is! I never noticed a real smell to them until after I used cloth on my son. Now I cannot stand the smell of them. I know I am not alone on this!

I moved onto looking into hybrid diaper systems such as gdiapers. I love their covers I think they are the cutest things. My husband wanted us to be able to choose the letter on the back of them though 😉 These would cost me a little more than disposables. I also didn’t like that with each diaper I would have to swoosh it around in the toilet and then possibly need to flush two times. I just didn’t see the point in it to use that much water up just for a diaper that will be better for the environment than disposables.

I then moved onto cloth diapers. I was overwhelmed with all the options, and still am to some degree. There is always something new and different. Yes, there are only so many ways you can make a diaper, but moms like me sure are finding new ways! I never knew shopping for cloth diapers could be so much fun. I mean it is something that your child POOPS on! Not an outfit to show off. And when I ran the numbers to see how much I could save, my jaw dropped. I will warn you, it can be an addiction. There are just way too many cute things out there!

At this point, I am not sure if I really saved any money. For me, it wasn’t about the money. It was about what I am doing for my child today and for his future.

This brings me to my question, why do you use cloth diapers? If you don’t use cloth diapers, what is holding you back?

When we first started thinking about using cloth I think one of our main incentives was money. Now, I love it so much I would use cloth no matter how much cheaper they were! Saving money is nice, but I mostly do it because of health/environmental reasons…. and because they are so cute! :)

I think a lot of people are intimidated by cloth. They think it's really hard and time consuming and don't realize how easy and fun it is!
